ROOTS 2009:

Ashton Family History - Roots Weekend
17 to 19 July 2009
Ashton's Heritage Lottery Funded project

For details and events for the Roots weekend see further down the page

Roots Weekend, a Huge Success!

The weather may have been mixed, but the response to the Roots 2009 weekend was all positive.  Many visitors came from some distances to enjoy the displays and exhibitions of old Ashton.  Names were put to faces in faded photographs, old headstones of family members found and tales of life in a smaller, quieter village recounted.

The film show on Friday evening was attended by over 100 people, many of them enjoying fish and chips straight from Mr Sarson's mobile fryer.  The films were of Ashton in 1940s and 1960s by Tess Wilson and 1900 to 1975 by Reg Bailey.  Both of the films shown are available  on DVD and are available to purchase.  Contact David Farrand 01604 863225 or email david@farrand.co.uk for details.

The official opening of the Knights' Hall went well on the Saturday.  The buffet for the sponsors and guests (supplied by Ian of the Old Crown) was much appreciated and eaten outside in the Churchyard.  Heritage Lottery were represented by Joan Bray, who was very impressed, not only by the work done in the Church, but also by all the effort that went into the whole weekend.  She seemed very pleased with the way in which the HLF grant has been spent.

Much of the Roots weekend was about pictures. Old photos of people, places, transport and village life were on display in both the Church and the Rugby Club. Many people spent a lot of time looking at them and working out how places had changed and how their families had looked and dressed in the past.

The photographic competition "History in the Making" was to try to ensure that future generations would be able to glimpse Ashton life in 2008/09.  We did have a winner in each age group. Christy O'Callaghan won the primary group with a well thought out angle on the Church. Ciara Holmes won the secondary age group with a picture of the post box in the wall on Roade Hill, and Andree Brown won the adult section with a snow scene of the Church. With climate change, the judge thought this might be a very rare sight in the future. If you do have photos that show village life now, please could you let Andrew Fowler see them, so they can be scanned for the archives. They will be returned to you intact.

Despite the cold and the rain, the Hog Roast and Barn Dance went very well. We are very grateful to the Zannotto family for allowing us to use the Barn for this event and also for the Teas on Sunday afternoon. It was an ideal venue for both occasions. Thanks also to the residents of Little Ashton, who supplied the salads, and everyone who donated sweets.

On Sunday, four gardens were opened. These proved so popular that not many people made it round all four! They found so much of interest to talk to the owners about, that time ran out. Thank you to the gardeners. It takes an awful lot of time and effort to get a garden to such a beautiful condition.

Those who did not make it round the gardens on Sunday, took part in the Treasure Hunt, or enjoyed a leisurely cup of tea while listening to the Grafton Scout Band. Quite a crowd turned up to watch Lesley Peyton-Gilbert give a Riding Demonstration on her beautiful horse Bats. Many of them stayed to ask her questions afterwards.

During the weekend, there were three "Walk and Talk" sessions conducted by Andrew Fowler and David Farrand. These were all well attended and some people went on more than one! These walks gave a brief history of various parts of the village, including the oldest house, the old Mansion House, the Manor and other points of interest.

As you can see, there was an awful lot going on over the weekend of 17th-19th July. The Roots 2009 committee would like to thank everyone who helped to make this event such a success, either by providing pictures, preparing displays, making cakes/puddings, or just by supporting the event by turning up!
Thank you

Stephanie Fowler, Andrew Fowler, Wendy Turvey, Ann Lamb, Angela  Malin
and Marion Wilson (Roots 2009 committee)
