Hire Knights’ Hall Banner:
Final Update ! (January 2010)
On Sunday Jan 19th the church was packed with local families and visitors to take part in a celebratory service to include the unveiling of the church wall-hanging that had been made to recognise the re ordering of the church in 2009.
Allan Clarke, a former resident of Ashton and member of The Hollies, kindly accepted our invitation to unveil the wall hanging. It was a very happy occasion with lots of fun and laughter and after the service the whole congregation joined together with drinks and nibbles! There was much excitement, particularly amongst the school children, as they looked for their own piece of sewing on the banner.
The banner has brightened up the Knights' Hall and the making of it brought together a group of people who had hardly known each other before so we hope we have encouraged some community spirit.
Please come and see the finished result and a final personal thank you from me to all the people who have helped to make it possible and put up with a year of my nagging! Not just the seamstresses but others who donated materials and helped to design and fix the wall-hanging in the hall.
Also a big thank you to Sue Campbell, head of our village school, who was very willing to let us come into school on a regular basis (and towards Christmas very irregular times) to help every child in the school to stitch their own contribution.

We are nearly there !!!
(December 2009)
Exciting news! After nearly a year from the first ideas, through planning and design to stitching in so many forms the wall hanging to commerate the reordering of the church and the creation of The Knights' Hall is almost complete. It is going to be officially "unveiled" at the family service on January 17th 2010, at 10.30. Alan Clark originally of The Hollies and a former resident of Ashton is coming to the service to "do the honours" and refreshments will be available after the service.
This has been very much a community activity with every child who has attended Ashton Primary School during 2009 taking an active part plus parents and other people connected with Ashton helping in different ways----designing, stitching, providing materials etc.Over the last 12 year a centre core of 10 ladies have met on a monthly basis to keep the plans and sewing moving forward.
We would love as many people as possible to join us on January 17th to celebrate the climax of a year's hard work. It is worth mentioning that in a recent Ofsted inspection at the school, the inspector saw the work on the banner as a very impressive link between the school, the church and the community.

Knights Hall Banner - Progress (May/June 2009)
Stitching has begun!!
Thank you to all the people who have been helping in so many ways from ideas to designing to donating fabrics to the sewers etc etc.
The school children have been working on their contributions since the beginning of term. The idea is that every child in the school will have stitched something towards the banner by the end of 2009. This includes the pupils who will be leaving this term(they have already completed theirs) plus the new reception children who will be starting in September!
There are a regular group of people who meet once a month and each of them is making an individual piece that will go towards the final banner. We are expecting applique, beadwork, collage, embroidery, tapestry--to name but a few and each one will represent something to do with Ashton village life.
Obviously there is a long way to go but we hope, by September, to be ready to start putting the whole thing together.
We are trying to have a "mock up" of the final banner to display in the church over the Roots weekend so watch this space.

Hidden Skills in Ashton -- Part 2
Thank you to everybody who has shown an interest in helping to create a commemorative banner to hang in the new Knight's Hall.
The very snowy weather played havoc with the originally planned meetings, but we are slowly moving forward with the final design.
What we need now is people to submit any photographs, sketches, paintings etc, of things you find symbolic of Ashton. Eg.. The Lychgate, The Crown Pub sign etc. These would be used in some way to be incorporated in the banner design.
We really need your help and would be grateful if you could deliver these to Helena Lee, 37 Stoke Road, by March 20th.

Hidden skills in Ashton?
Now that the reordering of the church is almost finished, it would be a wonderful
opportunity to recognise the occasion by making some form of decorative banner to
hang in the new Knight's Hall.
Ideally we would like it to be a community venture withpeople of all ages getting involved. The banner would be made up of several sections and could include embroidey, machine sewing, material collage, tapestry, etc.
A coffee evening is to be held at Bron Kenny's house (67 Stoke Road) on Monday 22
February at 7.30pm to discuss the idea. The project will need any one who is artistic
or can sew (not necessarily to a particularly high standard!) or would like to help support
by sponsorship towards the materials.
If you do not feel able to help, you may know someone in your family who would like to take part in some way. Do come along for a chat or, if you are unable to come on that particular evening but are
interested in the idea, please ring
