School News
October 2010

Ashton Church of England Primary School

Term has started well with 36 children in the school.  We have welcomed two children into the Reception class and four children into years two, three and four.  We are delighted to welcome back Diane Shadforth after her unfortunate accident and Laura Wilson ( nee Higginbottom ) who married in August.  We are missing the six children who left us last summer for NSB, NSG and Roade Sports College but are pleased to report that they have all settled well into their new schools.
The Junior class are studying the Ancient Greeks and have enjoyed visits by train to the National Gallery in London to look at pictures of Greek myths and to the Ashmolean in Oxford.  There the children experienced life in the Agora (Greek market) and were able to handle authentic coins and artefacts.
An architecture workshop enabled the children to design and build their own Greek temple.
The Infant topic is ‘Pirates’ and they have designed and built a pirate ship and are due to visit a pirate play area in Wellingborough.  The outside play area has been turned into a pirate ship and term will end with a pirate tea party.
The Infants have also been to see Room on the Broom at the Derngate as part of their literacy.
Fund raising this term has benefited the Pakistan flood appeal when over £100 was raised with a mufti day, bring and buy and a coffee afternoon.
A Church assembly was well attended in September and many children and their parents attended the Harvest Service in Ashton church.
The new term will start with the annual Pumpkin competition on Monday 1 November, with Ian Street judging the winners.
The main fundraising event of 2010 will again be the annual firework display on Friday 5 November. The bonfire will be lit at 6.15pm with fireworks at 7pm.  Prices have been held for yet another year and ASPA have worked hard to ensure that this will again be a hugely successful event.

School Governors Meeting
 21 April 2010

Ashton Church of England Primary School have introduced a new Community Service into their school calendar. At least once a term they hold their School Assembly in the church and would love any of the village community to join them. Refreshments  are served afterwards. The 2 assemblies, they have held in church since January, have been very impressive and gives the children a wonderful opportunity to share their skills and thoughts with the village community.  Do come along.

The next Church Assembly is on June 17th. Please contact the school or look
out on the village notice boards for the time.

School News
January 2010
Ashton Church of England Primary School

We had a disrupted start to the term with snow and ice but were fortunate to be able to keep the school open as we have sufficient local staff to cover.

The opening of 'Bron's Banner' was very well attended by children and their families and they all enjoyed seeing the result of their sewing.  A special 'thank you' must go to Pat Nevison who did all the hard work on behalf of the school.

A service led by Junior children last month was again well attended by parents and the community and this will be a regular event.

Our tea and mufti day to raise funds for Haiti was a great success and over £230 was raised which is amazing for the size of the school. Thank you to everyone who contributed to and attended the event.

Anyone who passed the school last Monday morning may have been surprised to see a 'dragster' in the playground.  This came from Santa Pod and was part of the Infant class topic of 'Journeys'.

On Friday 12th February the Junior class will be holding a 'Chembakoli Tea Party' to mark the end of their topic on India. Members of the community are welcome to join us.
